Queenstown New Zealand

Queenstown New Zealand is a major international resort town in Otago. This town has everything for the adventurer can handle. Jet boating, whitewater rafting, bungy jumping, mountain biking, tramping and fly fishing is just some of the things you can try in Queenstown. Skiing and other snow sports at four major mountain ski fields attract tons of people all over the country. Queenstown has a good reputation for its wine and food cuisine. The grapes for the wine are grown in a town close by.

I think one of the main things you have to do in Queenstown is go to the Skyline Gondola. The gondola takes up the side of a mountain that will give you some great views of Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu. Lake Wakatipu was formed 15,000 years ago by a glacier. Second largest lake in the Southern Lakes District covering 290 square km. 5 km in it’s widest point and 399m at it’s deepest point. Once at the top you have a choice of things to do from Paragliding down, to riding the luge down the side of the mountain. Or you can just sit back in the restaurant and do some shopping. I went with the family down the luge a few times, that is one awesome ride. You basically ride down the side of a mountain in a small motor less cart that you sit in. Gravity does the rest. All you have is a helmet, elbow pads and the knowledge on how to put on the breaks. There is an easy track and a hard track that has sharper turns and steeper hills. Plus great views of the lake and down town, no time to stop for pictures, your to busy flying down the hill.

For all you that really want to get your blood going and looking for a rush, Queenstown has a set of 3 attractions that will do the trick. Helicopter ride over Skippers Canyon and white water rafting from Deep Creek to Cascade rapid will get your blood racing. Plus the famous Shotover Jet Boats on the Shotover River. You sit in a specially designed boat that holds about 12 people, it has a pair of high speed engines on the back that makes the boat very agile and fast. You will be going by rocks only feet away. And make sure your not leaning forward when the driver throws the boat in a 360 degree spin or you could fly out of the boat. That was me.The pictures below are from the view from the Skyline Gondola looking back across Lake Wakatipu, the Skyline Luge and Lake Wakatipu at ground level.
