Dunedin New Zealand
Dunedin is the second largest city in the South Island. Founded in 1848 by Scottish Free Church at the head of a large harbor on Otago Peninsula. Original name for the city was “New Edinburgh”, but Dunedin won out , it was derived from the Gaelic name for the same city. The city surveyor, Charles Kettle, designed the city to have great view over the town center and its fantastic harbor setting. The Octagon is know as the city center of Dunedin. It’s a eight sided plaza bisected by the cities main street, George Street. In 1861 gold was discovered in a close by town, so as you can imagine the town’s population exploded, along with it’s wealth. The city quickly became New Zealands biggest city. Tourists are drawn to this town by Dunedin’s wildlife. The tons of seals, Yellow Eyed Penguins and the Royal Albatross, with a average wingspan of nearly 3m (9.8 ft).

North Island is a lot more populated than the South Island, so with that fact in mind there acres and acres of forest land that can only be reached by boat or a long hike. So if your a big hiking and camping fan, this would be a great place to go and get some great fishing done. So there are more than enough boat tours and sight seeing walking tours to go around that will take you up close and personal with the South Land Wildlife from Wellers Rock is a good start for just an hour trip for $85 per person. You can check out mainland nesting place for the Northern Royal Albatross and a maybe even a colony of New Zealand Fur Seals. Keep a look out for sea lions and dolphins swimming along side your boat. Then you have a 8 Day Southern Traverse Scenic Tour Christchurch over to Franz Josef , to the rain forest of Queenstown. Snow capped mountains of Milford and Otago Peninsula. Sounds like a non-stop 8 days of all out tourist fun.
There a good handful of places to stay in Dunedin, from one room studios to a castle a short distance out of downtown. Larncach Castle Dunedin seems to me the best place to stay if you like staying a room that is designed around a castle theme period. The rooms have a outstanding views of the ocean that is just 1000 feet below your window. Each guest gets to have a tour of the Castle and to have dinner in the castle dining room. This place has tons of history and antique's all over the place.
