Auckland New Zealand

To start off with Auckland is called the City of Sails. The cities population owns more boats per head of population than any city in the world. Also home of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, whose Team New Zealand held the America's Cup between 1995 and 2003. Auckland was first settled approximately 650 years ago by the Maori people. The rich soil and fertile land would have been a much sought after location to live back then. Auckland is dotted with volcanos all over the region creating thermal pools, steam vents and hot mud pools.

Auckland New Zealand is a the most populated city in New Zealand. Downtown is just like any other big city except for the Maori culture that sets NZ apart from the rest of the world. There are enough things to do here that it can easily take 2 weeks. From Sailing tours up to the Bay of Islands, to Kelly Tarltons to check out some the indigenous sea life. You can see penguins too walking through a huge tube with sharks swimming all around you. Fishing boat tours, jet ski's for hire and any kinda of water sport you can think of.
Auckland lies on and around an isthmus, less than two kilometers wide at its narrowest point, between Mangere Inlet and the Tamaki River. There are two harbors in the Auckland urban area surrounding this isthmus: Waitemata Harbor to the north, which opens east to the Hauraki Gulf, and Manukau Harbor to the south, which opens west to the Tasmen Sea.
Auckland straddles the Auckland Volcanic Field, which is made up of about 50 volcanos. They have made up cones, lakes, lagoons, islands and depressions. All the volcanos are all considered extinct, although the volcanic field is merely dormant. The recent and largest volcano is Rangitoto Island that was formed within the last 1000 years, its eruptions destroyed Maori settlements on neighboring Motutapo Island some 700 years ago.
